Many zoos use this gimmick to attract visitors and garner free publicity. What picture editor could resist a photo of a lemur propped against a weighing scale or a gorilla standing next to a giant ruler? But for the captive animals, it’s just another day – no different from all those before it and all those ahead. In zoos across the UK, animals wait for relief that will never come.”

This is a great piece, well written, timely and we couldnt agree more.
We looked at the London Zoo website – full of pictures of the weigh-in. When you do with truly open eyes you realise just how bizarre it is to see a camel on a weighing scale, on a concrete floor infront of a corrugated wall, when its backdrop should be desert sand and blue skies, for example.
This is why we also work to educate on the reasons as to why zoos should cease to exist. There’s no place for these prisons in our society and indeed when at a recent talk by the Director of CAPS, it became evident that actually zoos perpetuate great harm to animal populations. This is a far cry from the conservation that they boast as a reason for their existence. They are businesses profiting from treating animals as commodities. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s why vegans will not visit them and we urge everyone to reconsider where they spend their hard earned money. We’d encourage people to either to a genuine conservation organisation or sanctuary instead and watch and learn about animals in the fantastic documentaries that exist.
