Army dogs put down when no longer ‘fit for purpose’…

Loyal service yet the MoD lets them down.

Loyal service yet the MoD lets them down.

The MoD continues to destroy dozens of dogs.

“Details of the destruction of dogs and horses were released in response to a parliamentary question by Kevan Jones, the Labour MP and former defence minister.

Military Working dogs were used throughout the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan either to protect soldiers on patrol or to search for buried roadside bombs.”

This was covered by the Express and commented on by Animal Aid. Read more here.

VLA response:
We agree with the comments by Animal Aid as this does feel exactly like the dogs have served their purpose and when they are no longer fit for this purpose they are disposed off like other old ‘kit’.
But are we surprised that the MoD would treat any life in such a way? Not really. It’s all numbers not names with them, regardless of the species.
What is most upsetting is that there is ALWAYS an alternative if you really want to find one. For example, why not house them in a sanctuary or indeed a special facility where they can live out the rest of their lives in the peace they deserve.
One simple answer – money.
It’s time we started to question what price a life – any life. Until there is a sea change in attitude amongst all of us sadly it won’t change. But the MoD had an opportunity here to do something that meant something and that set a positive example. Sadly they missed it by a military mile.
